We found that most states had at least one or two nearby stations with lower fuel prices than Costco. However, when we averaged the total cost of an equivalent amount of fuel purchased at Costco and other locations within each state, many of these seemingly cheaper competing stations ended up being higher-priced on average overall. In some cases, this was due to local taxes on fuel that were factored into the pricing for nearby stations.
